Editor's Note: Cooling and ventilation are critical for diesel generator sets. The machine room must have sufficient airflow to meet the combustion and cooling ventilation requirements of the generator set. Below, we summarize the requirements for cooling and ventilation to serve as a reference when designing the machine room layout.
01 Cooling Requirements
1) When installing the generator set, the radiator should be positioned as close as possible to the exhaust outlet to prevent the recirculation of hot air. When no ductwork is available, the distance between the radiator and the exhaust outlet should not exceed 150 millimeters. If the machine room cannot meet the above requirements, it is recommended to install appropriate ductwork. 2) The area of the exhaust outlet should be 1.5 times the exhaust area of the radiator. Typically, ductwork and exhaust louvers should be installed in conjunction with the radiator. 3) Duct bends should be made using appropriate elbows. For longer duct runs, larger duct sizes should be used to reduce exhaust backpressure. Long-distance duct silencers should be specially designed according to the characteristics of the building. 4) Building intake and exhaust vents are typically equipped with louvers and grilles. When calculating vent sizes, the effective ventilation area of the louvers and grilles should be considered. 5) The combustion and cooling of the unit require a large amount of air, which is often overlooked. It is recommended that the total area of the intake openings be at least twice the heat dissipation area of the unit. All openings should be designed to prevent rainwater ingress. In cold climates, the machine rooms of standby and rarely operated generators should be insulated. Adjustable louvers can be installed on the intake and exhaust openings, which can be closed when the unit is not in operation.
02 Ventilation Requirements
1) Air dampers or louvers serve to isolate the generator room from the surrounding environment. Their opening and closing operations should be controlled by the generator set's operational status. 2) In cold regions, movable air dampers installed in generator rooms should allow for air recirculation within the room to heat it during cold periods, thereby enhancing the generator set's efficiency.
A good environment in the diesel generator room is crucial for the normal operation of the diesel generator. Therefore, it is essential to pay close attention to cooling and ventilation measures in the room to ensure the reliability of power supply from the unit.
